Campaign Bootcamp launch new training for environmental justice campaigners of colour

Applications for Rooted in Resistance are open until 9am Monday 14 June!

Rooted in Resistance is a free online training programme, open to people from racialised* backgrounds who are passionate about racial justice.

The programme, led by Campaign Bootcamp trainers and environmental activists, Karen Larbi and Nish Doshi, will run weekly sessions from Thursday 12 August to 28 October 2021.

We are soon to release research, gathered in 2020, showing People of Colour and racialised communities are less likely to be included in environmental movements.

Rooted in Resistance is a space for campaigners and activists of colour to create community and share skills and knowledge.

The 12-week training is curated for new and experienced campaigners, covering:

  • Using life experience to campaign on issues that affect you
  • How to set campaign goals, create a campaign strategy and identify who to target, and how to get heard
  • Develop skills with technology and grow confident in using digital tools for online campaigns
  • Meeting other racialised people who also care about environmental justice
  • Learning in an accessible, supportive and friendly environment

On creating a space for environmental justice campaigners of colour, Karen said:

“People of Colour make up the majority of the Earth’s human population, yet the mainstream environmental movement has been too slow to connect climate justice to racial justice, and to meaningfully engage people of colour in the movement.

Our communities hold a wealth of knowledge, insight and expertise that we need to change our relationship with ourselves, each other, the more-than-human and planet Earth. I’m thrilled to create a beloved community where we can unlock this wisdom for the benefit of us all.”

Nish added:

Racialised communities have been organising around environmental justice for centuries – whether that’s been about protecting their lands from those who seek to exploit it or about having access to clean water, and fresh food. Rooted in Resistance hopes to support you in centring those stories and experiences into your campaigns.

There are 10 spaces on the course, with applications closing at 9 am on Monday 14 June.

* This is inclusive of Black, Asian, Roma, Traveller, South American, North African and Middle Eastern people and those who have experienced racism
