Campaign Bootcamp launch second training for older campaigners

Our second round of Age Activism training will train a group of seven campaigners from Leeds and Newcastle

Following the launch of Age Activism, our programme for older campaigners, we’ve created a training for a group of activists from Leeds and Newcastle.

The Age Activism group training kicked off with an intro session in November, and runs from December 2021 to January 2022. It will cover:

  • How to use life experience to campaign on issues that affect the group and tackling ageism in society
  • Setting campaign goals, creating a strategy, identifying who to target, and how to get heard
  • Growing confidence in using online tools to campaign
  • Mapping allies and the power they have to change things
  • And much more!

The three main issues the group’s campaigning will explore are preserving and protecting green spaces, tackling senior bus pass limitations in Leeds and access to public seating and toilets in the city centre.

The training will also provide a supportive space for the group, helping to combat the digital divide by up skilling folks on using technology so they can best use it in their campaigns.

Ms A, who joined the first Age Activism programme, said:

“’The Age Activism training not only provided opportunities to meet other like-minded activists but also gave me training and skills to continue activism with enthusiasm and purpose. I have already used some skills acquired and it shows that learning never stops and is a continuous process; we need supportive and excellent training on a regular basis, whatever age!”

Sue Balcomb, our lead trainer of the programme, added:

“I know how it can feel  when ageism plays a role and my experience, knowledge  and skills are not recognised – so I have enjoyed crafting this programme that totally respects and makes use of what people are bringing to the group and their campaign development.”
