Scholarship Spotlight: Blagrave Trust Scholarship for Young Campaigners

Young people so often are at the forefront of making political and social change, and we want to support them to do that better!

As we’ve seen from the huge surge in young people campaigning, voting, and making their demands known during the last General Election, it’s clear that the tired stereotype that young people are politically apathetic just is not true.

Young people so often are at the forefront of making political and social change, and we want to be able to support them in their missions, so it’s particularly important to me that young campaigners feel that Campaign Bootcamp is financially accessible to them.

That’s why I’m glad to say that Blagrave Trust is funding our Young Campaigners scholarship – which is a scholarship specifically for campaigners aged 18 – 25 from Berkshire, Hampshire, Sussex and Wiltshire. I’m constantly inspired by the thoughtful politics and activism showcased by the young people who have come on Bootcamp. So for this blog, I thought I’d show off some of the fantastic campaigners who were under 25 when they came on Bootcamp below.

Kimani (Bootcamp 8)

Kimani is a higher education campaigner who is involved with the young people’s campaign group Let Us Learn. He’s passionate about encouraging universities and the government to remove the barriers to education faced by young people, particularly those of migrant backgrounds.

Samia (Bootcamp 7)

Samia is an environmentalist who campaigns for cleaner air in her local area. She is interested in fighting for the rights of our natural environment and hopes for others to see the intrinsic value of our land. Samia. Since coming on Bootcamp, Samia has started ‘Our Air Our Health’ which is a campaign & creative youth engagement group tackling air pollution in Tower Hamlets.

Melissa (Bootcamp 7)

Melissa is a young Latin-American woman living in London. She campaigns and does activism around domestic violence, migrant/refugee solidarity, LGBTQ issues, and issues affecting the Latin American community in the UK. An activist group she is involved with is currently working on an anti-gentrification campaign to save the Latin Village – an indoor market under threat of social cleansing in Tottenham, London.

Kayleigh (Bootcamp 5)

Kayleigh was 18 when she came on Bootcamp and studying Charity Development at university in the South West. She is passionate about disability rights and campaigns for accessibility on public transport and works on campaigns with the NGO Whizz-Kidz. In her spare time, she likes to play basketball and the piano.

If you’re a young person starting out in the world of campaigns, you should definitely apply for Bootcamp. It’ll give you the skills, confidence, and network you need to persevere in your activism – and that’s pretty great!

If you’re successful in getting a scholarship you’ll get access to a year-long Campaign Bootcamp programme. It starts with a week of intensive training at our idyllic venue, Gilwell Park in Chingford, London. After the residential is over you’ll be offered a year of mentorship, follow-up training, and community support.
