Our first scholarship specifically for campaigners tackling racism and xenophobia in their activism.
It’s back! Last year we launched our first scholarship specifically for campaigners tackling racism and xenophobia in their activism. I am pleased to announce that we have managed to secure more funding for this successful scholarship for our next two bootcamps – applications for which are open now. Get to it! The deadline to apply is 9am on Wednesday 15th March.
Bootcamp 8 saw NINE powerful activists receive the Anti-Racism scholarship – and wow what a difference these faces made to the cohort. Click on their photos below to find out more about their activism:
It’s really important to support those tackling racism and xenophobic on the frontline of their communities. Bootcamp gives grassroot campaigners the key skills, confidence and support network they need to run powerful campaigns – this is particularly pressing in the UK’s current political context of aggressive racism.
Post EU referendum and in the era of Trump, black and brown folks are bearing the brunt of an emboldened far right politic. This proverbial pat on the back for fascism has resulted in a surge of unabashed racist and xenophobic assaults in the UK. What was once masked behind twitching curtains and coded whispers about immigration and ‘those communities’, is now being paraded violently on our streets. Racists and xenophobes weren’t created by these political horrors, but they sure do feel validated by them.
Add this to the context of violent deportations of people of colour who have been living and working in the UK for years; the overpolicing of black and brown folk that, like in the case of Mzee Mohammed, too often leads to death; the persecution of PREVENT; the application of ‘no recourse to public funds’; Trump’s ‘Muslim ban’ and the racism embedded in our justice system, and it’s not a pretty picture.
At this time a lot of us are fearful; fearful for our families and our loved ones, and rightfully so. But what’s giving me hope is the coming together of folk who are proactively standing up to racism and xenophobia. I am heartened to find myself reading about more and more resistance groups forming to tackle racism and xenophobia in the UK. I’m also heartened to see the energy with which people have been organising to resist the so-called ‘Muslim ban’.
We want to support this activism here at Campaign Bootcamp with more Anti-Racism scholarships. The scholarship can cover the full course fee (including accommodation + food), or partially cover it (dependant on need) and additional travel bursaries are available.
If you know anyone who might be interested in applying please share this blog with them right away — all applications must be received by 09:00 on Wednesday 15th of March. To apply people just need to go here: http://www.campaignbootcamp.org/apply
As well as this new scholarship we have funding for activists of colour (working on any campaign issue), environmental activists, international development activists, refugees and migrants and much more. All the information people need to apply is here: www.campaignbootcamp.org/apply
This scholarship wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the teams at Barrow Cadbury Trust, The Paul Hamlyn Foundation and Open Society Foundation. Big thanks to everyone there who worked with us to make this scholarship happen.
